The Top 10 Auto Accident Mistakes & How Top Clinics Prevent Them

1. Delaying Medical Evaluation (“Waiting to See If Pain Goes Away”)

  • The Mistake: Adrenaline and shock mask soft-tissue damage, micro-tears, and inflammation for 24 to 72 hours. Delaying care creates a gap in treatment that insurance adjusters use to claim injuries were not caused by the crash.
  • How Top Clinics Help: Clinics like Interstate Medical Group offer same-day or next-day intake evaluations, establishing an immediate, legally sound medical timeline that links symptoms directly to collision mechanics.

2. Admitting Fault or Minimizing Symptoms at the Scene or to Adjusters

  • The Mistake: Saying “I’m okay” or “I think I’m fine” to police or insurance adjusters before a proper physical exam.
  • How Top Clinics Help: Front-office and clinical teams at practices like InterState Medical Group guide patients on communicating safely with insurers, advising them to report objective medical findings rather than subjective initial guesses.

3. Assuming “Low-Speed” or “Minor Bumper Damage” Means No Injury

  • The Mistake: Believing that a 10 mph fender bender cannot cause bodily damage. In reality, modern bumpers transfer kinetic force directly into the vehicle’s occupants, causing severe cervical hyper-extension (whiplash) or disc bulging.
  • How Top Clinics Help: InterState Medical Group specializes in biomechanical diagnostics, documenting how occupant G-forces cause ligament micro-tears and disc trauma even when vehicle body damage looks minimal.

4. Not Knowing How Oregon Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Works

  • The Mistake: Thinking medical care has to come out of pocket or wait for a legal settlement, or giving private health insurance first when Oregon auto PIP is primary.
  • How Top Clinics Help: Interstate Medical Group educate patients upfront about ORS 742.520, verifying their $15,000 no-fault PIP coverage and billing auto insurance directly so patients pay $0 out of pocket during initial treatment.

5. Skipping or Interrupting Treatment Gaps

  • The Mistake: Attending a few appointments, feeling slightly better, stopping care for 3 weeks, and then returning when pain flares up. Insurance adjusters flag treatment gaps as proof of recovery or a new, unrelated injury.
  • How Top Clinics Help: InterState Medical Group implement structured re-evaluation schedules (e.g., re-exams every 30 days) and active patient outreach to maintain continuous care notes that withstand insurance audit. In addition, their EHR sends a text reminder 24 hours before and then again same day, which is interactive so you can reschedule for the important nuances that pop up with a busy lifestyle.

6. Relying Solely on Urgent Care or ER Visits for Long-Term Recovery

  • The Mistake: Going to the ER, getting an X-ray to rule out broken bones, receiving muscle relaxers, and assuming recovery is complete. ERs screen for life-threatening trauma—they do not provide soft-tissue rehab or joint mobilization.
  • How Top Clinics Help: Multi-specialty clinics like Interstate Medical Group transition patients from emergency triage into active conservative rehab, utilizing non-surgical spinal decompression, trigger point injections, shock wave therapy and high-powered LASER, and physical therapy.

7. Accepting an Early “Quick Cash” Settlement from the At-Fault Insurer

  • The Mistake: Signing a full release liability waiver within 2 to 3 weeks of a crash in exchange for $1,000–$2,500 cash before full diagnostic imaging (like an MRI) is completed.
  • How Top Clinics Help: InterState Medical Group ensure thorough diagnostic workups X-rays that include stress views (ordering MRIs for persistent nerve radiation or disc pain) so patients know the full scope of their injury before discussing final claim settlements.

8. Giving Recorded Statements to the At-Fault Insurance Company Without Advice

  • The Mistake: Allowing the opposing driver’s adjuster to record a statement where tricky questions lead the victim into understating pain levels or pre-existing conditions.
  • How Top Clinics Help: InterState Medical Group maintain strong networks with reputable Salem personal injury attorneys and advise patients on their rights regarding recorded statements.

9. Failing to Document Daily Functional Limitations

  • The Mistake: Only tracking pain levels (e.g., “7/10 pain”) instead of functional impacts (e.g., “unable to lift child,” “cannot sit at desk longer than 15 minutes,” “sleep interrupted 4 times nightly”).
  • How Top Clinics Help: Provider charting at clinics like InterState Medical Group emphasizes functional loss documentation, neck and back disability questionnaires which carries significantly more weight during attorney settlement negotiations.

10. Not Knowing What Happens When PIP Is Exhausted ($15,000 Limit)

  • The Mistake: Panicking or halting care abruptly when auto PIP limits run out.
  • How Top Clinics Help: Top Salem clinics like InterState Medical Group seamlessly transition patients to Attorney Liens (ORS 87.555), allowing care to continue without upfront cost while a legal claim is pending. This involves the provider to reach out to the attorney on the case and explain why they feel the patient needs additional treatment and even forecasts how much extra that is going to cost, keeping your attorney educated and informed through the recovery process is integral to reach a reasonable settlement for the attorney.

I'd always been afraid to visit a chiropractor's office, but I'm so glad I did because I've felt so much better since my visit. Dr. Michael and Dr. Cohn have helped me feel so much better. I have less and less pain with each visit. I love getting regular adjustments, and even the TPI injections have helped me tremendously in managing my muscle pain. The massages are a really nice and relaxing bonus; the staff knows what they're doing and is always super friendly and helpful. A 10/10 experience!

Dr. Michael is absolutely amazing! He really knows his stuff. My husband wasted years of time and money on other chiropractors who did very little to relieve his pain. We were becoming concerned for his future and his ability to run his business. After just 2 visits he feels like new. Dr. Michael is truly a blessing from God!
